Poetry Study – Part Two

During the past few weeks, we have been studying poetry as our writing focus.

After analysing a variety of poems in class, students then wrote poems about a variety of topics, including:

  • The Environment
  • Feelings and/or emotions
  • Our class novel, The One and Only Ivan
  • Lighthearted/humour
  • Free choice

Students used the writing process to perfect their poems. We have been using the writing process for all of our genres this year and it has really helped everyone to develop their writing skills.

We looked at a wide variety of poems and discussed that some poems follow a certain structure (eg. Haiku poems, cinquain poems, limericks, rhyming poems). When writing their own poems, students were encouraged to focus on language, word choice and rhythm rather than specific structures. The results were very impressive!

  3. Hi Everyone,

I loved doing the poetry keynote. My favourite poem that I did was probably my one about taco’s, minions, Ruby or Summer.

My favourite poems are either Limericks or Haikus.

    Here is a Limerick:
There once was a guy named Rob
He didn’t have much of a job
But then one day he fell in a hole
    Tried to jump out
And then started to cry and sob
(Partly written by my older brother Kai) (:

I hoped you liked it! I know I do!

    See you Later,
    Kennedy (;

    • Hi Kennedy,
I like your poem that you and your brother wrote. It was really creative.

Do you like writing poems about nature?
      I do.

      See you soon,
      Anna

  4. Dear Fokes,

Since I couldn’t see every poem because I couldn’t scroll down I only comment on the ones that I could see.

Nelly’s about Rainbows was really AWESOME!

My favourite type of poems are funny and ryming ones.

SORRY, I couldn’t think up a poem right now.

    Great Poems,

  5. Hi 4A and 4B,
The poetry was much fun! All the poems that I have seen from the classes have been realy good.

Here is a poem that I wrote about being sick,

    My head is sore
    My throat is closing
    My belly is aching

    Could this get and worse?

My body feels like it has turned to ice
My teeth chatter inside my head
For now, all I can do is lie on the couch

What if I can never be healed?

Can you write a poem about Miss Jordan or Miss Curtain? I hope you are up for the chalange!
    Emma.

  6. Hi everyone,
I had a great time writing poems and publishing them on keynote.

I thought all the poems I read were really creative. My favourite were Georgies. I thought Georgies poems were really good.

I like to write all sorts of poems, but my favourite type of poems are nature poems.

Here is a poem for you..
    Thunder, lightning strike
    From above the clouds
    Run away, far away.

    Bye,
    Anna

  7. I found learning all the different types of poetry challenging.
I liked writing rhiming and nonsense, there were lots of other types i enjoyed.

    Peace out
    Romy

  8. Hi 4A and 4B,
All poems are amazing. I didn’t know how good the poems were, they all have so much emotion.

The poem I liked the most would probably be nelly’s one about bubblegum because it has an emotion of happiness.
    Bye,
    Maeve

  9. Dear 4A and 4B,

I really liked doing our poetry study!

Because you can not scroll down to see all the poems on our iPads, I could only see the start of most of them. I really liked the start of Georgie’s poem! It’s cute 🙂 .

I like to write funny poems, rhyming poems and huiku poems. Sometimes I get a bit frustrated when I am writing rhyming poems becuase it takes a long time to find the right words!

Here is a poem I wrote.

    Winter

    It’s cold here.
Freezing wind blows through the open windows.
A red light glows in through the chimney.
    Finally, warm again.

    Hope you like my poem!

    Do you like my poem?
    Who is your favourite poet?

    Bye,
    Eevie 😉

  10. Hi everyone!,
I loved your poems they where AMAZING!

I like to write regular poems. I find rhyming ones a little tricky.

Here is a poem, try guess what the topic is 🙂

    Hop, hop, hop around,
I was there now i’m here,
Nom nom nom on juicy carrots,
    All day long!

Did you guess what the topic was? Write it in a reply! 😀

    Bye everyone,
    Nellstar out 😉

  11. Hi 4A and 4B,

I love the poems and I thought the poetry study was very informative.

I love to right hiku poems because they are fun and are really easy to right.

    This is my poem:

    Trees
    Wave, wave in the breeze,
Home, home to birds and possums,
    Move, move so freely.

    There’s my poem.

Can you guess what kind of poem it is?

    Bye,
    Nell

    • Hey Nell,
Is your poem a haiku poem? I counted the syllables and realised it could be one. I like writing limerick, normal and rhyming poems. Here is my poem:

      Waving, constantly
Rushing, like the big bad rip.
      Although, I like it!

What type of poem is mine?

I can’t view the poems on my iPad but I reckon they’re good.

      Over and out,
      Daisy 🙂 😉 😀

  13. Hello everyone,

I really enjoyed doing the poems it was a lot of fun. I learned a lot about poems and and how they work. He is one of my poems.

    Sadness,
    A dark horrible feeling,
    Sadness,
The terrible feeling you get when something bad has concluded
    Sadness,
When a strike hits you and tells you its dark world.
    Sadness,
The emotion that inside hurts the most.
    Sadness.

    Hoped you liked it.

    Bye Leo.

  14. Hi everyone,

Sadly I can’t view the poems on my iPad but I am sure they are all great.

Here is a poem that I made up:

    What is that standing there?
It kind of looks like a bear.
    I’m sure it’s not a human cause,
It looks like big brown hair.

    I turn around,
    They’re everywhere,
    I can’t believe what I see.
Then I take a closer look,
And oh it’s just a tree.

I had lots of fun making the poems in the poetry study.

    Hope you liked the poem!

    -Will

  15. Dear 4a and b,

Doing poems in writing for the past couple of weeks has been so much fun and I loved it! I loved getting my felling sand emotions onto the page.

I loved all the poems Miss Jordan put on the blog. I like how there’s a mixture of funny and serious, happy and sad, and strange and cute!

I like to write emotional and serious poems because that’s what I’m best at surprisingly!

Ok here’s a poem I thought of on the spot
    Lily Lott flew a kite,
Red, blue, yellow, green and white.
    Colours swirled around the sky,
    Making it look very high.
It went red, yellow, green then blue!
It went so high that poor Lily flew!
    She flew past Paris,
    And over Mr Nalarris.
Then it came to a stop.
All the town laughed at poor Lily Lott.

    See you soon,
    Ané
