Investigating Newspaper Articles

In 4B, we have been studying newspaper articles in our recent writing sessions.

We have read a variety of articles together as a whole class and individually. A news article discusses current or recent news of either general interest (found in daily newspapers) or of a specific topic (which can be found in daily newspapers or specialty newspapers such as finance or political papers).

Students analysed each article by identifying the following elements:

  • Who the article is about
  • What the article is about
  • Where the news is taking place
  • When the news happened
  • Why it is news
  • Who is quoted
  • What background information is included.

We have also looked at the structure of the articles and the language that journalists use.

Students were asked to bring in articles from home to study. One of our lessons involved students doing a newspaper investigation by reading these articles that were spread around the classroom. Everyone created a Google Sheet on their iPad and recorded the key elements of each article to immerse themselves in the writing genre.

Students are now writing their own news articles. We look forward to sharing them in a future blog post!

What have your learnt about newspaper articles?

  1. Hi Miss Jordan,
It’s me Anneliese, your former Grade 4 student in 2013. Wow! Time has passed so quickly, it seems like just yesterday that I was in Grade 4. I’m now in Grade 6 and my teacher is Mr Daffy. I can’t believe it’s halfway through the year already. As I said before, time does pass quickly. I’m still best friends with Princess and we are enjoying school so much.

We’ve learnt so much in all different areas. Spelling is still my strongest subject and I’m reading lots of challenging books. In Maths we’ve been learning a lot about different things but at the moment we are focusing on 3D shapes and their properties. I’ve also learnt how to find the area of a triangle, and that was pretty hard.

You’re still a great blogger, as I remember and I look forward to seeing more posts on your blog. I miss you dearly and I would like to say thanks for all the things you have taught me (it’s definitely helping me). Oh and one more thing. Remember those posters you made on the comprehension strategies: well we have copies of them up in our classroom.

    • Hi Annie,
Yes, time dose pass quickly. Life moves pretty fast and if you don’t look around once in a while, you could miss it! I’ve been wondering how many seconds are in a week or a year.
      Kind regards,

  4. Hi 4B and Miss Jordan

I am loving the news articles and all the activates we did to help us with the lead, who, what, when, where, why, quotes and background information. Do you think it helped our learning and did you like it.

My news article is about the maths project where we had to plan an awsome holiday any where in the world.

Did you like the maths project if you did I might get a quote from you.

    From your class mate Rex
